Project 'Reintegration'

Envisioning strategies for facilitating the reintegration process of the people in Colombia’s prison system to civilian life.

About the project

Probono Group Project with Háptica

Bogotá, Colombia

2019

Despite the effort made in recent years to improve the state of affairs, the prison system in Colombia finds itself in a situation of structural crisis that is incompatible with a social and democratic state of law.

As a part of the 2019 Global Gov Jam our challenge was to develop within 48 hours strategies for the reintegration of prison and post-sentence population to civilian life, which would decrease recidivism rate through a human-centered approach.

How might we facilitate the reintegration into civilian life of the incarcerated population in Colombia?

Workshops and group sessions.

Approach

KEY INSIGHT

The exit process is often confusing and occurs in a very short time. For this reason, the closing experience and farewell tends to be abrupt and often does not occur.

01/

Ethnographic research to understand user needs.

We had the opportunity to listen to family members and people who were deprived of their liberty. In addition, we had the vision of public policy students, citizens and foundations such as the Fundación Acción Interna, among others.

Mapping the experience of users through a Customer Journey allowed the team to visually communicate and represent the different moments of the experience though a "before-during-after" timeline.

02/

Designing and testing touchpoints.

After synthesizing the findings from the research, product design kicked in. With simple tools such as paper prototyping and roleplay, we selected the critical parts of the journey we wanted to intervene and prototyped specific touchpoints. Our facilitators provided feedback throughout the process from the scope definition to the designing of the prototypes.

03/

A ‘reintegration kit’ focused on facilitating the transition into civilian life.

The result is a step by step toolkit that facilitates the reintegration process of the prison and post-sentence population through specific tools that allow them to navigate the transition process.
